Our small gift to our New Zealand community in times of COVID-19

2020 has turned out to be a very challenging year for our community. Without a vaccine in the months to come, social distancing appears to be our only means to avoid being a statistic of COVID-19.

The standing advice from the NZ MoH is that people over 70, immunocompromised or have certain pre-existing health conditions, should stay at home as much as possible. This very sound advice, inevitably makes your job as a pharmacist in providing crucial and vital interaction with your patients, that much harder. Your chronic care patients that most of you know by name, are unfortunately the ones that will miss out the most from the personal service that you provide every month when they turn up at your pharmacy for their prescriptions.

In expressing our appreciation of your dedicated service to our community, and our wish to contribute to our community, we would like to offer our app (AiMed) and pharmacy patient management portal service to all our existing customers and all pharmacies in New Zealand for free until March next year. We will cover all costs of setting up your pharmacy, provide free remote training and support, as well as covering the server operation cost for pharmacies that would like to come on board.

We are a small medical software company that has been providing this patient centric medication reminder, refill reminder and request app for the past four years in New Zealand. Some key benefits of our tool include:

  • Enable patients to:
    • receive medication reminders on their phone, including reminder when their medication is running out, and
    • send requests for repeat prescriptions to their pharmacy via the app.
  • Enable pharmacists to:
    • automatically update your patient’s medication from the most commonly used dispensary system in New Zealand.
    • receive requests for repeat from your patients and communicate with them via the web portal to their app.
    • see or get notified if they wish, to monitor certain groups of patients who are perhaps in LTC on medication compliance.
  • Enable delivery of medication directly to your patients by having access to your patient’s most updated address on the app, and the ability to manage requests for repeat prescriptions from your patients.

This is our little contribution to our community that we hope will provide you with the tool to help look after your patients.

Stay safe and healthy!

Risk of mixing prescription medications and dietary supplements

Are you taking prescription medications for your medical condition and also taking vitamins, mineral or dietary supplements?

Do you know that dietary supplements may interact with your prescription medications?

Some dietary supplements can change the absorption, metabolism, or excretion of a prescription medication. This can increase or decrease the effect of your medication, causing you to get either too much or too little of a medication you need.

An example of medications interacting with dietary supplements is St. John’s Wort, a herbal supplement. Medications for heart disease, depression, and birth control pills are less effective when taken with St. John’s Wort.

Warfarin, a prescription blood thinner for treating and preventing blood clots, when taken with ginko biloba, asprin or vitamin E, may increase the potential for internal bleeding or stoke.

Mixing prescription medications and dietary supplements can potentially give the opposite effect of improving your health

are on prescription medication. Let your health care professional know what dietary supplements you are currently taking, the dose and how often you take them. It is also important to tell your health care professional if your health status has changed, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have had any recent illnesses or surgery.

A good practice is to consult your health care professional before you take any dietary supplement if you

How can AiMed help?

AiMed is a medication reminder and medication management mobile phone app. The app allows you to add both your prescription medication and dietary supplements into the medication reminder, creating a list that can be shared with your health care professional.

One of the impressive feature in AiMed is in it’s ability to provide visualised information on how taking medication and supplements affects you. Blood pressure, blood glucose level and weight can be tracked and charted on AiMed. The information can then be correlated with when you have taken your medications or dietary supplements to see if they are positively or negatively affecting your health.

AiMed can be downloaded FREE on your Android phone.
